2021 REFLECTION !!

This year has been a crazy but fun year for us. However, we were able to do a lot of fun things and make a lot of memories that we will treasure for the rest of our lives, such as year 8 camp, sports, vacations, Fiafia, and much more. Here are two of my favourite moments from this year.

Year 8 Camp:

As it was the last year, year 8 camp was a lot of fun and provided a lot of opportunities to bond with the other year 8s. During camp, I was able to gain a lot more confidence, as well as the ability to function as part of a team. It encouraged me and my friends to step up and out, and we learned a lot about each other as a result. Ax throwing was obviously one of my favourite activities. It was new to me, but I eventually got the hang of it:)

FiaFia:

FiaFia was undoubtedly fantastic. We were able to have our families watch us perform, and each of us students was able to demonstrate a few of the various traditional dances.  Like Tongan, Hip Hop, Fijian, Bollywood and many more.  I had the good fortune to be a member of the Tongan Girls. I was able to witness how others danced and learn a lot of new moves from all of the sessions, which was a lot of fun.

I had many memorable moments during my time at school, but these are the ones that I'll remember for the rest of my life. Despite the fact that Covid-19 disrupted several planned activities, we were able to complete the year with plenty of memories and friends.

Literacy Planet

Over the past few weeks we've been using Literacy planet. Literacy Planet provides a lot of fun things for us to enjoy. Literacy Planet is sort of like Maths whizz, we have to complete a decent amount of task and however much question we get right our prize is Gems and points.

Gems + Points: Gems and points help us to do more tasks, and get a bit competitive aswell. Our teacher has access to see how many points we have and how well we did on our task. It's really cool because we all want to get first place, and to do that we need to do more task.

Comprehension: Literacy provides us with heaps of tasks. Comprehensions being one of them. Literacy Planet will give us books for us to read, and 12 questions to answer. It really fun because we usually do is get one of our classmates to do the answers first, and submit answers that way we can see the right answers and get 100%.

Spelling:This site also gives us a decent amount of spelling tests along with a couple of games like Code Phrase, Battle Rocket and more. We each have to hear what word the person is saying and try to spell in correctly. I usually get it correct which is why its fun.

Grammar: Some of task gives us a focus for example Direct Speech, Metaphors, Question/Interrogation and more. It gives us questions like ' which is the only true statement ' & match the first part of each sentence with the second, its really fun.

More Task: These were just a few task Literacy Planet provides us with, theirs also Sight Words, Arcade Game, Phonics and we even get to design our characters which is fun. It also provides us with levels, for year 1's all the way up to year 11. Literacy has helped me with my grammar and more.

Attitude Talk !

Today Team 5 were lucky enough to have a few people come and talk to us about Puberty. Jannah talked to the girls while Robbie and Charlie talked with all the boys. Jannah talked about how and when our body's develops and why it does. She also gave us a few tips on how we could prevent Bio and smelling weird. This was a very helpful talk as we are growing up and heading into our college years. We also played a few games, wrote questions on a piece of paper, just in case some of us were to shy to ask.  She also provided us a few things that may come in handy.

Literacy Planet

This is what I've been upto during the past 2 or 3 weeks. Literacy Planet. This is a very fun educated site to go on, it helps with your reading, metaphors, punctuation etc. Already I've learnt a lot from this task. Basically you get your teacher or parent to set your account up. They then unlock task for you to master each day. If you get all the answer correct you get gems. In my class we see who is winning, so we make it to be like a competition which is fun but we do get competitive at times. I'm currently in 2nd place with 158 points and 234 gems.

105 Year Old Running Breaks Record

This article was quite surprising, even the title "105-year-old runner sets world record" seemed strange. This was a fascinating essay to read. In a timing of 1 minute and 2 seconds, Julia Hawkins set a new world record in the 100m. This time was extremely nice to some people, like myself, but Julia was disappointed because she hoped to finish it in one minute.

If you're interested in reading more articles like this, click here for the LINK and have fun. Enjoy

New Zealand Couple Grow Worlds Biggest Potato

Because lately most of my blog posts have been about Te Reo and Maths, I decided to challenge myself and do a bit of literacy work. Fractions, Decimals, & Percentage.

If you were wondering why I've been posting heaps of maths slides, is because during our maths meets, our teacher put out a challenge, we had to finish all 17 maths task and had to finish is before Friday morning. After that I decided to just do all of it in one or two days just so I don't have to rush, and try and finish it last minute. Any ways in this task was all based around fractions, decimals, & percentages. Enjoy

We had to fill in the spaces and try and understand what a particular object meant in Maori. With my create task, I must take the terms that I learned today and apply them to my create task.

Writing: 100-word paragraph

Museums present visual art as beautiful things you can touch

Me and my brother were constantly arguing, we couldn't help but notice water dripping from the painting frame. "How is this- what is happening right now!" I screamed. My brother went to the opposite side of the room without hesitation, grabbing the painting and attempting to stop the situation, but no matter what my brother tried, it didn't work, and piles of water poured out of the picture frame, filling the entire room with water. It soon felt like we were in the middle of an ocean, because there was nothing but water gushing out from the image, which was bizarre.

The following is the description of my writing assignment for today. I had to choose any photo and write a 100-word piece about it as if it were alive. I couldn't think of anything to write about, so I just wrote about the movie Portal To Narnia, which is where the picture came to existence. Enjoy

Laundry Basket Advert

Today's literacy assignment is as follows. I had to choose something from around my house and create an advertisement for it. I took a look around and decided to put up an ad for my washing basket. This is the result of my brainstorming. With this advertisement, I wanted to convey to my readers that this particular laundry basket not only has a great capacity, but it is also lightweight. Enjoy

Persuasive Writing

I am convinced that John Cena is one of the many successful people in the world today. John Cena, also known as "The Prototype," is a professional wrestler, actor, and television personality who goes by the nickname of "The Prototype.”

John Cena has accomplished a lot in his life, from winning championships to appearing in some of the most popular films. John Cena has also been travelling across the world. India, China, and Paris, to mention a few. But, of all the places John Cena has visited, the Tamaki Kitchen, also known as the Whare Kai, is his favourite and the one he visits the most.

But there was one thing about John Cena: he was deodorant-obsessed to the point of obsession. John is so obsessed with deodorant that if he were stranded on a desert island, the only thing he would want is deodorant.

John Cena made it a rule that he would be the only one in the Whare Kai who could wear deodorant. With all of his achievements, everyone decided that he should be the only one in the Whare Kai who used deodorant.
WWE Smackdown: John Cena to appear at Madison Square Garden

The following is an example of my quirky/weird persuasive writing. I had to incorporate Deodorant, John Cena, and the Tamaki kitchen/Whare Kai in my writing. This was a great enjoyable writing assignment for me because it was unique and I enjoy persuasive writing. I have to persuade my readers that John Cena should be the only person in the Tamaki Kitchen who can use deodorant. Enjoy.

About Me Poster : CyberSmart

This is a poster that I created about me. The top three images are of our family that we have taken over the years. Underneath those family images are the sports that I participate in and enjoy. Rugby and Netball are two of the most sports that I like. Because it is my culture, I have included a Tongan and Samoan flag below. And there's a portrait of me in the middle. Enjoy

Dames Valerie Adams Diet

This is my quick meal plan for the Dames Valerie Adams Diet, as far as I can tell. According to my research, she claims that when she plans her meals, she eats a healthier and more balanced diet. I know the dinners, are at least the closest things to what she eats, based on what I learned. I suppose it's the same for breakfast and lunch. Enjoy

Extension Term 3 - Controversial Topic

This was my responsibility for the extension period. First, we discussed what constitutes a controversial topic. "Referees and Umpires - How do they choose who will umpire and is that person neutral in their decisions?" was the topic we chose. My group did study on what referees do, and we had to figure out whether an umpire at the Olympics was being biassed. Enjoy

Immersion Assembly

Today was the first day back at school for Term 3. If you've been updated with the sports, you would probably already have heard that the Olympics are currently on, and that's what this term's theme is based on, " Healthy Me , Healthy You ".

As always we started the day off with our Immersion Assembly. On the first day, the whole school usually gets together to see what each teams movie or item , and also to know what they will be learning about this year.

My favourite item was team 5. Not to be bias but the reason why I liked team 5's item was because it was funny, and also it was very interesting to watch. In the team 5 item they were 3 athletes from 3 different country's USA, Australia, and New Zealand, they had each performed a routine in front of the whole school. Out of all of the routines I really enjoyed watching the country Australia, because it was funny and entertaining. But the overall winner was New Zealand.

Overall the Immersion Assembly was very fun, and I'm looking forward to what we will be learning about this term.

K.P.M.G Trip.

Yesterday, the Extension group went to K.P.M.G along with a few other people in team 5. We were lucky enough to have Miss West and Mr Jacobsen come along with us, they made good sure everthing was organised, made sure we were polite, and overall made sure we all had fun. In this writing I'll be sharing one of my highlights from the trip.

My main highlight from the day was doing my experiment. All of us got into groups, our group name was Earth, the other group names were Fire, Air, and Water. Each group was give a experiment to do based around our group names. For our experiment we had to make oobleck, which is basically just cornstarch and water mixed together. Making my oobleck I noticed, if you added pressure to it, it would feel solid, and add less pressure it would become a liquid. It was very fun but also frustarting, mainly because when I would mix the ingredients my sticks would break. But overall it was so fun.

Lastly, thank KMPG for provided a awesome trip for us. And I hope the next few people who come on the trip will have alot in not more fun than we had.

Why does Matter matter ?

The three basic properties of matter are volume, mass, and shape.

All matter is made up of tiny particles called atoms.

Volume is the amount of Space that matter takes up.

Mass is the amount of Matter an object has.

The three basic properties of matter are volume, mass, and shape.

Liquids take the shape of their container.

Gases do not have a definite shape or volume.

Liquids do not have a definite shape, but they do have a definite volume.

Solids have a definite shape.

An ice and chair are examples of solids.

Water and Milk are examples of Liquids.

Oxygen and helium are examples of gas.

Solid ice is melting when it is changing into a liquid.

This is the task I did this morning. We had to answer questions based around Matter. A fact I learnt during this task is, the three states of matter are liquid, solid, and gas. Enjoy

Colosseum Report !

Colosseum ! A historical landmark in Rome, Italy. The colosseum, is an oval amphitheater, which basically means, the Colosseum, is an open-air location which is used to show performances, sports and other occasions.

Construction began in 72 AD, under the order of Vespian. The Colosseum was constructed by thousands of slaves, and was made with bricks, stones, and concrete. 8 years was the amount of time it took for the slaves to complete the buildings of the Colosseum. Once it was complete it could seat upto 50,000 people. During the 8 years of construction, Vespian had died. Vespian’s son, Emperor Titus, was given the honors of opening up the Colosseum. The Colosseum was the height of a 12 story house, and it’s 156 meters wide.

The Roman Colosseum was used to entertain people with Gladiator battles, animal hunts, and mock naval battles, and Sea battles.  The first game, in the newly built Colosseum took up to about 100 days. These games helped keep the Emperor popular with the people of Rome. Loads of animals fought, and were killed, as the crowd cheered, everything to, elephants and tigers, to bears and bulls. Sinners were also executed there. Sometimes villains were used to reenact old myths and stories, where the characters would be attacked by animals. With everything that happened in the Colosseum, gladiator battles attracted everyone. They battle against each other, for the entertainment of the viewers. Elite gladiators could become celebrities drawing huge crowds, and collecting riches, that would grant them to retire in comfort, assuming they’d live a longer life.

Other than the gladiator battles, a more splendid performance was the Mock Sea Battles, which was also called Naumachia. The colosseum was built on a false lake, and underneath it had channels that could transfer water to the Colosseum. They used the water to flood the area floor, until the water was deep enough that real ships could sail on it. Once the sea battles ended, the Colosseum was drained quickly, so that the next event that occurred would take place on dry land. In the Colosseum these sea battles only lasted for a short amount of time.

Remember readers, these are just a few facts I wanted to share with you. Doing my research I found that the Colosseum is still a place where people can visit and learn about that area and what made it such a historic place. Overall I hope from this Information Report, you readers have learnt something new !

Kauearanga Valley Christian Camp ( Reflection )

From the 19th of May to the 21st, our year 8's including me, took part in a leadership camp. The camp was called Kauaeranga Valley Christian Camp. We were all split into 4 groups. Each group was named after something that had to do with the camp site. The groups were Thames, Coromandel, Kauaeranga, and Kauri. I was in group Kauri.

We had a heap mount of rotation. Two of my favourites, was the Flying Fox, and Ax throwing. My group, unfortunately didnt have a full rotation on the Flying Fox, but majority of us was able to have a turn. We had to go on the flying fox holding a red ball. As were getting closer to the end, there was a blue container. We all had to try to attempt to chuck the ball in the container, it was super fun. I got the ball in on my second try.

Ax throwing was my other favourite activity. We had to each have practice trys, before we had to make our own target. With all my trys I was able to get 2 ax's to stick on the wood. The thing I learnt in Ax throwing is to try different throws, to see which one actually worked.

Overall Kauaeranga Valley Christian Camp was a amazing experience. It showed me ways on how to be an amazing leader to my peers and others, but it also helped my get out of my comfort zone.

My Leadership Goals

This is an inquiry based task. The two slides I did were all about leadership. I had to write, how I've been a leader around my peers and others, and how I can do better. Enjoy.

Streets For Everyone

Today we went around the streets and had a look at our projects that we were working on last term. When we started walking, that first project we saw was my project, me Simon, and Oalii's project, we were very amazed at the project because it was very cool, the first picture we saw, was a Lizard, we had to try and complete the lizard using the letters, we had to try and spell out the street names, but before we did that we had to figure out what the street name was. The street names were 'Holland' and 'Waddell'. The other picture we came across was a fantail, probably the symbol of our school. I couldn't possibly remember what the street names were, because I have to admit it, I wasn't paying that much attention to the words/street names, because I was just colouring it in with the chalk. Right now you might get bored, so I'm gonna end it off here, go and check out my classes blogs to see what else we looked at.

Information Report - Planet Mars.

Mars! Mars is the fourth planet in our solar system, and also holds the largest mountain, which is 3x larger than Mt Everest! This information report is based all around planet Mars.

Mars is known as the red planet. This signature colour comes from a chemical, known as iron oxide. Another reason why the planet Mars is red, is from rust, which causes the soil and atmosphere to look red. This is also the reason why they named the planet Mars. Mars is named after the ancient Romans for their god of war, mainly because its reddish colour resembles blood.

Mars is the fourth planet in our solar system, as already said. And its distance from the sun is 315.32 million km. 4.603 billion, is how old Mars is, and was found in the year 1610. Did you know, there were 18 missions to Mars ? And all those missions were successful.

There are two moons that Mars has, which are Phobos and Deimos. Phobos is the innermost and bigger moon of Mars. Phobos is named after the Greek God Phobos, and a son of Ares and Aphrodite, and the twin brother of Deimos. Deimos, is the outermost of the two moons. Deimos’s distance between Mars is 23, 460 km, much further than the other moon.

Remember readers, there is way more information about Planet Mars. Who knows, maybe one day we might have to live on Mars. Overall hope you enjoyed reading this report, and I also hope you learnt something new as well.

This was my writing task for this week. I had to write a information report based on planet Mars. This was a fun task to do, hope you enjoyed, and learnt something new aswell.

Improper Fractions

This is another one of my maths task for this week. What we had to do for this task was to convert between mixed and improper fractions. Hope you enjoyed, and hoped you enjoyed something new from this post.

Fresh Fractions

             Fresh Fractions

We are learning to find fractions of a whole and of a set.

We are learning to add and subtract fractions

What is 1/4 of 4?  1

What is ¼ of 8? 2

What is ⅓ of 6? 2

What is 2/6 of 12? 4

What is ¼ of 20? 5

What is 1/10 of 20 ? 2

4 of us are sharing a chocolate cake. What do we cut it up into? 4 quarters

12 of us are sharing a chocolate cake. What do we cut it up into? 12 pisces

I have 5/16 of a cake at a birthday party. I keep going back for more and eat another  6/16 of a cake. What fraction of a cake have I eaten altogether?   11/16

I have 10/21 of a cake left over from the party. Then I give 6/21 of a cake to my sisters. What fraction of a cake do I have left over? 4/21

⅓ + ⅔ = 3/3

¾ + ¾ = 1.5

⅕ + ⅗ = 4/5

⅘ - ⅗ = 1/5

5/10 - 1/10 = 4/10

55/60 - 40/60 = 15/60

12/20 + 17/20 =  1.45

This is one of my maths task for this week. This task is based around fractions. Hope you enjoy, and hoped you learnt something new aswell.
